AN INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC FINANCE THEORY & PRACTICE
In An Introduction to Islamic Finance, finance experts Zamir Iqbal and Abbas Mirakhor give an authoritative overview of the key religious principles and how they impact on Islamic finance. They explain that Islam postulates a unique set of contracts that directly affect the various social, political, economic and financial systems. An Introduction to Islamic Finance explains that Islam has taken a tough stance, maintaining a strict prohibition on interest. Not surprisingly, conventional finance analysts were initially shocked by this idea and predicted that such a financial system had to fail. Instead of interest, Islamic finance determines the return on capital after the event, based on the return generated by the funds. Iqbal and Mirakhor point out some advantages of this system over conventional debt and interest-based finance. An Introduction to Islamic Finance gives a unique insider’s view of how the principles of Islam can produce a viable and stable economic system. In doing so, it highlights and questions inequities in that have become embedded in conventional financial systems. This is challenging and thought-provoking reading for everyone concerned about the future of global economic systems.

Islamic Economics – A Short History
The study covers Muslim economic thought from the emergence of Islam, long before economics became a separate discipline with distinctive analytical tools. The economic environment in ancient Arabia from which Islam emerged is examined, and the economic concepts in the Qur’a-n and Sunnah are discussed, as well as the thinking of early Muslim Caliphs and jurists. Detailed consideration is given to Islamic economic thought during the dynasties of the Umayyads and the Abbasids, periods of administrative and economic reform, as well as of much latter developments under the Ottomans, Safawids and Moghuls. Islamic revivalist reform movements are appraised, as these predated the reawakening of interest in Islamic economics in the last century, and subsequent profusion of writing, with the works of the leading contributors reviewed in this volume.

Medieval Islamic Econonmic Thought – Filling the Gap in European Economics
By S.M Ghazanfar

This book is a collection of papers on the origins of economic thought discovered in the writings of some prominent Islamic scholars, during the five centuries prior to the Latin Scholastics, who include St. Thomas Aquinas. This period of time was labelled by Joseph Schumpeter as representing the ‘great gap’ in economic history. Unfortunately, this ‘gap’ is well embedded in most relevant literature. However, during this period the Islamic civilisation was one of the most fertile grounds for intellectual developments in various disciplines, including economics, and this book attempts to fill that blind-spot in the history of economic thought.

Aly Khorshid demonstrates how initial clerical apprehensions were overcome to create pioneering Muslim-friendly banking systems, and applies the lessons learnt to a workable insurance framework by which Muslims can compete with non-Muslims in business and have cover in daily life. The book uses relevant Quranic and Sunnah extracts, and the arguments of pro- and anti-insurance jurists to arrive at its conclusion that Muslims can enjoy the peace of mind and equity of an Islamic insurance scheme.

Critical Issues on Islamic Banking and Financial Markets
This book examines the principles and practices of Islamic banking and financial markets, particularly from the Malaysian experience. The main objective of Islamic financial system is the promotion of justice. In this manner, both legal and ethical dimension of product choice and development are equally important. It means that market players and Shariah advisors should not produce Shariah complaint products along the juristic plane alone but also how the products impacted economic justice and efficiency. For this reason, the principle of risk-taking (ghorm) and the principle of work (kasb) are paramount in determining Shariah legitimacy of profits derived from transactions in Islamic financial institutions. Risk (ghorm) and work (kasb) both constitute the essence of trading and commerce (al-bay) the Quran has propagated over usury (riba). Based on these principles of risk and work, the book examine at current Islamic financial product with a critical outlook. It consists of eleven sections with every section containing many short-articles on Islamic financial markets.
